Age Gap Relationships in Colombia

When I first arrived in Colombia, I was already in my 60's and I was generally dating women around the age of 45-50.

Everyone had cautioned me...

“Just because you're a Gringo doesn't mean that you are suddenly more handsome and a babe-magnet. If it seems that younger women are attracted to you, they are probably just after your money.”

I met a few gold-diggers, but most of the women I dated have been pretty nice people. I'm still friends with some of them.

I didn't think this was going to work.

When a young lady in her 20's started chatting with me, I was somewhat dissuasive. She didn't live in Medellin for starters. She also seemed inappropriately young to be interested in me. As I learned later, her father is 20 years older than her mother. She also had a favorite uncle who was more than twice the age of her aunt when they got married and they have now been married for nearly 20 years and have a lovely daughter. She sincerely did not seem to see age difference as an issue. Travel was difficult, because this was during the life-altering event that we shall not name here, so buses were not transporting passengers and airports were closed. It was a 6 hour trip across the Andes mountains in a fast car. She hired a private car and driver and came to Medellin to meet me.

I was stunned.

I decided that even if it only lasted a couple of weeks it might be fun and I didn't have much to lose. My housemate didn't want strangers suddenly staying in our house so I booked a hotel and we went across town.

Guess what we discovered? We each found someone that we valued and respected. I don't ever really talk about the math, but we have the biggest age gap of any relationship I have ever seen. It's also the best relationship I have ever had.

Our situation is unusual.

I think most women around the world would like to have financial stability. I can't find a serious fault with that. While my (now) wife and I have a huge age difference, in Latin America it's really not unusual to see younger women with older men. The 20-year age gap of her parents for example is not unusual, so you may have to shed some preconceptions about ages when dating.
